Loin des parcours scolaires précis, Stephan Sanson est autodidacte et a appris par lui même le métier. Il a commencé comme photographe pour des magazines à Paris, puis l’envie de voir autre chose l’a amené à travailler comme directeur de la photographie. Il n’a pas de spécialité et se dit « touche à tout ». Il travaille donc aussi bien sur des longs métrages de fiction, que des séries (TF1: Demain nous appartient, C8) ou de nombreux documentaires. Il travaille également pour la TV (Arte, BBC) et sur quelques publicités. Un directeur de la photo est responsable de la « chaine image » de A à Z. Il est d’abord l’interprète du réalisateur. C’est un « caméléon » qui sait s’adapter et comprendre le ou la réalisateur(rice) avec qui il va travailler. Ainsi chef opérateur et réalisateur forment un binôme au service de l’oeuvre. Le directeur de la photo communique ensuite avec les équipes et influence les couleurs, les décors, les placements, les costumes etc… puisqu’il est en charge de faire les choix techniques servant au mieux le visuel de l’oeuvre. Il est amené à être en contact direct avec la production pour justifier ses choix. Pour Stephan Sanson, la direction de la photographie est un métier complet. Il requiert d’être force de proposition, cultivé visuellement surtout à travers l’histoire de l’art (peinture, photos..) mais aussi modeste, humble et très ouvert d’esprit. Cela reste un métier très physique (mise en place du matériel) notamment lors de documentaires dans des environnements naturels qui peuvent être hostiles (marécages,animaux sauvages,..).
